Google Business Profile vs Website: Which One Does Your Business Actually Need?

A client asked me this exact question last month: "If I set up the free Google thing, do I even need a website?" She half-expected me to push the website — it's what I build, after all.

My answer wasn't what she thought. So let me give you the same honest version here, because the two tools do genuinely different jobs and the "right" answer depends entirely on where your business is right now.

First, what each one actually is

People mix these up constantly, so let's be clear.

A Google Business Profile (the thing that used to be called Google My Business) is that box that pops up on the right when you search a company — the one with the map pin, the photos, the reviews, the opening hours, the little "Directions" button. It's free, it lives on Google, and it's how you show up on Google Maps.

A website is the place you own. Your own address on the internet, your own pages, your own rules. Nobody can change the layout on you or bury you under competitors' ads.

What a Google Business Profile is great at

I'll say this plainly: if you run a local business and you haven't claimed your profile yet, stop reading and go do it. It's free and it's the fastest way to get found nearby. It's brilliant at:

  • Showing up on Google Maps when someone searches "near me"
  • Collecting reviews that build trust at a glance
  • Giving people your hours, phone number and directions instantly
  • Letting customers call or message you with one tap

For a brand-new café or a one-chair salon, a profile alone can carry you for a while. No shame in that.

Where it quietly holds you back

Here's the catch nobody mentions when they tell you "just use the free Google listing." A profile is rented space, and you're renting on Google's terms:

  • You don't control it. Google decides the layout, what's shown, and which competitors appear right beside you. Sometimes a rival's ad sits on top of your own listing.
  • It's shallow. A few photos and a description. You can't really tell your story, explain a complex service, or sell products.
  • No real booking or selling. You're stuck at "call us." No proper appointment system, no online store, no payment.
  • You're invisible for a lot of searches. The profile helps with "near me." It does almost nothing when someone searches for a specific service you offer but didn't list.
Think of your Google Business Profile as a billboard on the highway, and your website as your actual shop. The billboard points people in. The shop is where they decide to spend.

So which do you need?

Let me make it simple with three honest situations.

Just starting out, tight budget?

Set up the Google Business Profile today. It's free, it works, and it buys you time. Get a few reviews, add good photos, and see what happens. You can add a website the moment you've got a bit of cash flow.

Growing, and bookings/enquiries are getting messy?

This is the tipping point. When you're losing time to phone tag or missing customers who searched for something specific, a website starts paying for itself. It takes the bookings, answers the questions, and ranks for searches your profile can't touch.

Want to actually compete and look the part?

Then it's both, working together. The profile feeds you Maps traffic; the website catches it, tells the full story, and converts it. Link them up — same name, same address, same phone — and Google trusts you more, which lifts both. We do this pairing on most projects we take on, and it's where local businesses see the biggest jump.

The bottom line

It's not really website versus profile. One is free and gets you on the map; the other is owned and turns lookers into customers. Start with the free one if you must — but the moment your business is more than a side hustle, the website stops being optional. If you're at that point and want a second opinion, drop us a line. No hard sell, I promise.

Frequently asked questions

For a while, yes — especially for a brand-new local shop. It's free and gets you on Google Maps. But it's rented space with limits. Most growing businesses end up wanting a website they actually own.

Yes, completely free to set up and manage. That's exactly why every local business should claim theirs today, website or not.

Ideally yes, and they work better together. The profile gets you found on Maps; the website lets you control the full story, take bookings, and rank for more searches. Link them and they reinforce each other.
